Black and white photography has not become obsolete instead it flourished a lot. In the presence of color photography in abundance, it makes us like the black and white even more. The colors in the picture present the reality because we live in a world of colors and we recognize the stuff by its colors.

So, it is well enough to say that black and white represents the interpretation of reality. It is a difficult task to master the art of black and white photography. But there are some black and white photography techniques that will help you to improve your skills.

1- Take Images In RAW

If your camera offers the RAW mode then use it. It will save you a lot of trouble in converting the color photos into black and white. RAW posses the quality of storing the data that is useful for both color and black and white photography. It gives you the opportunity to view color images in black and white.

So, you will know what subject looks good in black and white and things you should exclude from the shot. Shooting in RAW will help you a lot in the post-processing of the image.

2- Try To Shoot In Color

The key to shooting in black and white photographs is to shoot in colors. If you use the monochromatic settings of your DSLR camera, it will result in worse sort of black and white photographs. The reason is that the black and white JPEG mode eliminates all information about colors. And your DSLR will get a very low amount of data to work in post-processing of the images. 

The other reason is that, it is the requirement of shooting RAW. By using the RAW mode a lot of data can be captured which will result in better photographs in either colored or black and white.

All you have to do is to set your camera settings to RAW plus JPEG and then set the monochromatic mode of the camera. This will help you in getting the idea of how the colored image will appear in black and white. 

3- Keep ISO At Lowest

If you want to keep the noise or grains in black and black photography less apparent, keep ISO at the lowest. It is important because noise created by ISO in shooting black and white is greater than the color photography. If you don’t keep the ISO lower, it will become harder to remove this noise in post-processing.

4- Lighting Well Suited For Black And White

It is important to consider the lighting conditions to shoot in black and white. Generally, the soft and light hours like a near hour of sunset and sunrise present the perfect lighting condition for shooting in black and white. The low contrast situations are perfect for black and white photography so, if it is the dark or overcast day, it will be great to shoot outside in black and white.
