Kerala was the first state to be recognized as the complete literate state in the year 1990 with 90% literacy. To date, it stands still in first place with the highest literacy rate of 94%. The enrollment of students in the elementary school has turned out to be 100% balanced among both girls and boys, and students of all social status. Kerala University is among the first 16 universities in India.

The roots of Kerala’s literacy emerge from the 19th century Hindu rulers. In the year 1817, the Queen of Trivandram issued a royal decree that states With a hope that education will make people knowledgeable, reasonable, and better subjects and public servants. The queen also built public schools and encouraged elementary education. And kings of cochin have also promoted education.

The teachers, mentors play a major role in the improvement of education and literacy rate.

Teachers are the ones who handle the students on a daily basis. It is important for teachers to connect with the students in order to under their problems and concern and help them resolve it.

The teacher’s education system directly reflects the country’s education system. To make sure the quality of education is maintained we have B.Ed courses and M.Ed courses. These courses train candidates with teaching skills.

The teachers coming out of the system should be capable of teaching skills like how to learn. They should be able to provide value-oriented education. Help students to develop higher mental abilities like analyzing, critical thinking, problem-solving. These are the key components that are helpful in day to day life. A teacher should be able to recognize the learner’s needs as all the students have a different pace of learning and accommodate according to the student’s needs. The B.Ed courses and M.Ed courses prepare them with the above-mentioned qualities.

The image of teachers as a taskmaster is fading and they are looked up to as an inspiration and guide. A teacher is expected to encourage students to be an innovator and at the same time, it is important to teach the students high morals and to be values-oriented.

The quality of education depends on teachers, one of the universities that provide the best quality of education program is Kerala University. It was established in the year 1937 and is located in Thiruvananthapuram the capital of the state of Kerala. They provide a training program for future teachers, the students who would be stepping out as the teachers for the next generation. They provide a teacher education curriculum and training that make them a perfect fit for the multi-dimensional role of a teacher.

In Kerala, the commitment to education spreads throughout society. The Kerala Government spends around 37% of the state’s annual budget on education. The former president of the Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad, a group that played a major role in the state’s literacy movement in the 1980s, P.K Ravindran said “Literacy is a prerequisite for social development,” “Without literacy, you cannot go forward.”

The Kerala government has brought the Right to Education Act in force from April 1st, 2010 to provide free education for more than 92 lakh children in India. The Right to Education Act provides the right to free and compulsory education at a neighborhood school to all children aged 6-14 years. No school fees or indirect fees such as the cost of uniforms, textbooks, meals, and transportation will be borne by the children or the parents, the government will bear all the cost for their education. The government will provide schooling free to the children until they have completed their elementary school education.

Kerala education system has proven to be one of the most efficient education systems across India. It is necessary to take measures to ensure the future of India is secure as it relies on the younger generation.
