Sometimes to cure any disease is essential to perform the surgery. 

Due to many diseases like heart disease, any severe injury and other major or minor operations require surgery. Surgery is not possible without surgical instruments. Surgeons and doctors have these sterile surgical instruments with them.

Surgeons and doctors don’t only keep the instrument ready but also keep these instruments sterilized.

Surgical instruments are in variety. Some of these instruments are for general use.

But many of them are used while major/minor surgeries, these surgical instruments made of stainless steel. Stainless steel is corrosion resistant and durable in use.

The classification of surgical instruments is in 4 basic types:

Cutting and Dissecting:

The sterile instrument in cutting and dissecting has sharp edges. These sharp edges help to cut through the skin and tissue, etc. Surgeons cut and examine the masses as it helps to find the damaged tissue. This cut and dissection explore the damaged tissue that needs treatment. 

The cutting and examination also help to find the irregular growth of the masses. The surgeons using these instruments are experts, and they make no mistakes while using them. 

But the nurses have to be careful while using these instruments. The inspection of instruments daily is essential.

What are surgical scissors called?

The scissors are the primary source for cutting. The surgical scissors are in a variety, having different functions.

Surgical scissors include bandage scissors, dissecting scissors, operating scissors, iris scissors, etc.

Clamping and Occluding:

Clamping and Occluding used as many surgical procedures such as compressing blood vessels etc. The squeezing of the blood vessel is to prevent the leaking in the hollow organs.

The word Occlude means to close or shut. So, these instruments used to control the bleeding. The shape of this instrument is curved or angled with a variety of inner jaw patterns.

The best example of this instrument is Hemostats and mosquito forceps.

Retracting and Exposing: 

These surgical instruments play a vital role in holding back the retract organs. These instruments help the surgeon to access the operative area. These instruments spread and open the skin, ribs, and other tissue.

Surgical instruments used to separate the edges of a surgical incision. Some of the retracting and exposing tools are “self-retaining”. This self-retaining instrument stays open on their own.

Other manual devices held open when needed. Different manual styles need to be kept open by hand.

For Example: Volkman Retractor.

Grasping and Holding: 

These instruments, as their name is for holding and grasping. The grasp and hold the tissue or blood vessel during the surgical procedure.

Before using these instruments, it is made sure that they are working correctly. The medical assistants make sure that the locking mechanism is lubricated for smooth functioning.

These instruments are only used after its proper operation; otherwise, the tool is replaced with the new one.

Forceps are the best example of these instruments.

What tools do doctors use for surgery?

The tools doctors/surgeons used for major surgeries are the following: 

Mechanical cutters, drill bits, scalpels, rasps, etc.

Suction tubes help in the removal of bodily fluids. Surgical staplers are the primary source for sealing.

Counting of instruments in the Operating Room?

The preparation for the surgery before the operation is essential. All the required surgical instruments checked and counted.

These instruments are in the shape of the set. This set includes all the instruments to be used in operation. 

The list contains a sterile surgical instrument that has the names on it.

There many more sterile instruments used for many other surgeries. Surgical instruments are the weapon for the doctors. Doctors cannot operate without these instruments. And every doctor/surgeon suggests using germs-free instruments.
