Isolator

Also known as unity gain, an isolation amplifier provides isolation from one fraction of the circuit to another. The primary function of this amplifier is to maximize the signal. It is used to give an electrical safety battier along with isolation. An isolation amplifier or isolator can also be used to protect the patients from the outflow of current. What is Isolation Amplifier?

An amplifier that does not have any conductive contact among I/P and O/P is known as an isolation amplifier. It also provides ohmic isolation among the input and output terminals of the amplifier. It must have less leakage and a high dielectric breakdown voltage. The typical resistor and capacitor value of the amplifier should have 10 Tera Ohms and the capacitor should have 10 picofarads.

Design Methods of Isolation Amplifier

Transformer

It uses two signals like PWM or frequency modulated. It includes 20 KHz oscillator, filter, rectifier, and transformer that give supply to the isolated stage. The main benefits of these amplifiers include high CMRR, linearity, and accuracy. They can be used in medical, nuclear, and industrial industries.

Optical

Here, the patient circuit is input, and the output circuit can be formed by a phototransistor. They are operated with a battery. I/p circuit changes the signal into light, whereas the o/p changes the light back to the signal. The main advantages of optical are:

  • It improves the safety of the patient
  • It connects optically without modulator otherwise demodulator
  • It can be used to get amplitude and original frequency

Some of the applications of optical are process control in industries, data acquisition, monitoring of the patient, measurement of biomedical, test equipment, interface element, controlling of SCR, and so on.

Capacitive

It can be used to send signals across a differential capacitive barrier. It includes both modulators and demodulators. Using capacitive, the input voltage can be changed to a relative charge over the switched capacitor. Some of the advantages of capacitive are:

  • It can be used to remove ripple noises
  • It can be used for analog systems
  • It gives high immunity to magnetic noises
  • It can be used to avoid noise

Some of the applications are data acquisition, interface element, monitoring of the patient, ECG, and EEG.
